The question, as traders ask it
On r/PropFirmTester, a trader asked "Why prop keep including consistency rules?" (April 2026). On r/PropFirmHunter, another asked simply "Consistency rule?" (March 2026). This guide answers the question from the firms' published rules. A consistency rule caps how much of your total net profit may come from your single best day. We track each firm's current funded rules on Prop Firm Center, for example Apex Trader Funding.
How to calculate it
Highest profit contribution = (best single day / total net profit) x 100, measured over the relevant period: per payout cycle at Apex, Topstep and FundedNext, with Topstep and Apex resetting the calculation after each approved payout. FundedNext's own worked example for its Rapid Pro account shows daily profits of $1,500, $1,200 and $1,800: after two days the ratio is 55.56% (not met), and on day three it reaches exactly 40.00% (met, because FundedNext qualifies at 40% or less). Equality matters, and firms handle it differently. Topstep's Consistency path qualifies at or below 40%, so a $2,000 best day needs exactly $5,000 in total profit. Apex's payout policy blocks a request while any day accounts for "50% or more" of cycle profit, so keep your best day below 50% there. The practical habit: check the ratio in your dashboard before requesting a payout, not after.
| Firm | Stage | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Apex Trader Funding | Evaluation (current products) | None; one-day pass possible |
| Apex Trader Funding | EOD Performance Account (funded) | Best day must be below 50% of cycle profit |
| Earn2Trade | Evaluation | 30%; at least four profitable days needed in practice |
| Earn2Trade | Funded | None - the November 2026 announcement confirms no consistency rule once funded |
| FundedNext Futures | Rapid Pro (funded) | 40% or less qualifies; Rapid Daily has none at any stage |
| Topstep | Express Funded Account | Consistency path: at or below 40%; Standard path: five winning days of $150+ instead |
| Tradeify | Select evaluation | 40%, or 50% with a paid add-on |
| Tradeify | Growth (funded payouts) | 35% |
Why firms say they use it
Firms that publish a reason frame the rule as rewarding repeatable trading. Topstep's payout policy says its consistency target "ensures that profits are distributed across multiple trading days, promoting consistent trading behavior." Earn2Trade lists maintaining consistency among its core evaluation rules alongside drawdown limits. Whatever the motive, the percentage and the stage where it applies are published in advance, so the rule is knowable before you trade.
What happens when you are over the limit
In the programs cited here, the published policies describe delay, not termination. Apex's EOD payout policy states the payout request option "will not be available until you reach 50% consistency", and its consistency article adds that the account stays active while you keep trading. FundedNext's Rapid Pro rules say that if your best day exceeds 40% of total profit, "you'll need to keep trading until your results become more consistent." At Topstep, the consistency calculation resets after each payout, so each cycle starts clean. Policies differ by firm and account model, so read the exact program rules that apply to your account.
Frequently asked questions
What is a consistency rule in prop trading?
A rule capping your single most profitable day at a set percentage of your total net profit, usually 30-50%, measured over an evaluation or a payout cycle depending on the firm.
How do I calculate my consistency percentage?
Divide your best day's profit by your total net profit and multiply by 100. Topstep and FundedNext qualify at exactly the threshold; at Apex, keep your best day below 50%.
Do all prop firms have a consistency rule?
No. Apex's current evaluations have none, and FundedNext states its Rapid Daily account has no consistency rule at any stage. Rules vary by firm, account model and stage, so check the exact program.
Can I lose my account over the consistency rule?
In the programs cited here, the published policies describe delayed payouts, not account closure: Apex states the account remains active while the request option stays unavailable, and FundedNext has you keep trading until eligible. Read your own program's rules to be sure.
