How much does a $50K futures prop evaluation cost?

The honest answer to what a futures prop firm costs at the $50K size has two halves, because firms bill in two different ways. Across the 71 one-step $50K evaluation plans in our dataset of 327 futures rows from 23 firms:

  • One-time billing: median $165 across 52 plans, ranging from $39 to $1,190
  • Monthly billing: median $179 per month across 19 plans, ranging from $49 to $265

Overall, 250 of the 327 rows (76%) bill once and 77 (24%) bill monthly. You can filter every plan by billing type on our futures challenge list.

Two caveats keep these numbers honest. These are plan rows, not firms or market share: firms with more plans count more. And the spread inside each billing model is wide, because price moves with the drawdown type, activation fees and how much of the rules package the plan bundles. The $1,190 top end, for example, is a single plan that charges no activation fee at the funded stage.

Monthly vs one-time: which billing model costs less?

One caution first: these medians come from different sets of plans, so this is not a like-for-like break-even. With that said, at the $179 monthly median a single month already costs more than the $165 one-time median, and each extra month widens the gap: two months cost $358, three cost $537. What a monthly plan buys you is the option to stop: if the fit is wrong, you are out one month instead of a committed one-time fee.

On the one-time side, a failed attempt means paying again or buying a reset where the firm offers one, so the reset price matters as much as the sticker. FundedNext, for example, sells Flex 50K resets at $82.99 against its $141.99 list price.

The rules frame how much time you are buying. The median one-step $50K plan in our data asks for $3,000 in profit against a $2,000 median max loss, and the most common stated minimum is one to three trading days.

Which extra fees change the real cost?

Three fees sit outside the sticker price:

  • Activation fees. Some firms charge a one-time fee when you pass, before the funded account opens. 14 of the 71 one-step $50K plans in our data charge one, at a $125 median (range $5 to $189). Topstep's Standard 50K path, for example, pairs a $49 monthly fee with a $149 activation fee charged once per funded account earned, stated on its official pricing help page.
  • Reset fees. Some firms let you restart a failed evaluation for less than a new purchase. Verified October 2026 reset prices: TradeDay charges $59 to $79 depending on the plan, FundedNext charges $82.99 on the Flex 50K, and Topstep charges $49 to $95 at the 50K size.
  • Reactivation fees. Lose the funded account later and a second fee tier can apply. Topstep's Back2Funded reactivation on a 50K funded account costs $599, per the same help page.

The cheap-sticker trap lives in the activation column. In our dataset, the lowest one-time $50K sticker is $39, on a Top One Futures plan that also lists a $189 activation fee: $228 from purchase through activation, against a $165 median sticker for one-step one-time plans at that size (activation terms vary by plan and are not in every row). Judge a plan on the total to get funded, not the checkout number.

What three real 50K plans cost end to end

We priced three verified 50K plans through the realistic scenarios, using list prices checked on the firms' own pages on October 25, 2026. No promo codes applied; promotions change week to week.

TradeDay QuickPay 50K (pricing, rules) bills monthly: $131 trailed intraday or $175 trailed end of day, no activation fee, resets at $59 and $79 list. A 55% promotion on the site cut the subscription to $59 and $79 when we checked, which means a fresh promo subscription can cost the same as a reset, so compare both at checkout before assuming a reset is cheaper. We track both versions on our TradeDay profile page.

FundedNext Futures Flex 50K (challenge page, official rules) bills once: $141.99 list, discounted to $74.99 for your first two purchases, no activation fee, resets at $82.99. Its drawdown is a tighter $1,500 trailing end of day, which is part of the cost picture: cheaper entry, less room. Our FundedNext Futures profile tracks all five of its plan types.

Topstep 50K (official pricing help) offers two monthly paths. Standard costs $49 a month plus a $149 activation fee when you pass; the No Activation Fee path costs $95 a month with no fee on passing. Resets cost $49 and $95 respectively. Comparing the fees alone, and assuming no resets, prices unchanged and the activation fee charged once: pass within three months and the No Activation Fee path costs less overall ($95 to $285 against $198 to $296); take four months or more and the Standard path costs less, because the $46 monthly saving wins back the $149 activation fee. Both paths list the same $3,000 target and $2,000 max loss in our data, and the help page notes that paths cannot be changed after purchase.

How does the cost scale with account size?

Bigger accounts cost more, but not in proportion. Moving from $25K to $150K multiplies the nominal account size by six, while the median one-time fee roughly triples, from $120 to $369.

Instant funding plans, marketed as no-evaluation accounts, are the expensive shortcut: 53 of the 327 rows in our data carry this label. At the $50K size the instant median is $480, about 2.9 times the $165 one-time evaluation median. What you skip is the evaluation purchase step; whether the account you receive is live or simulated, and which targets and loss limits apply, depends on the firm, so read those rules before paying the premium.

How do you keep the total cost down?

Five habits separate a cheap evaluation from an expensive one:

  1. Compare the actual plans on your shortlist, not billing labels. Our medians come from different sets of plans, so monthly versus one-time is only ever a per-plan calculation, as the Topstep two-path example shows.
  2. Check the activation fee before you buy. A $39 sticker with a $189 activation fee is a $228 plan, not a $39 plan.
  3. Know the reset price before you need it. At list price, TradeDay's $59 to $79 resets sit below its $131 to $175 monthly fee and FundedNext's $82.99 reset sits below its $141.99 plan, but promotions can close the gap: during TradeDay's 55% offer, a new promo subscription cost the same $59 as a reset.
  4. Read the funded-stage costs, not just the evaluation box. Reactivation fees, data fees and payout minimums all live on the rules pages.
  5. Treat every fee as money at risk. Budget for more than one attempt, and assume no fee comes back unless the firm's own refund clause says so. Prop trading can cost you every fee you pay.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a $50K futures prop firm evaluation cost?

Across the 71 one-step $50K plans we track, the median is $165 one-time or $179 per month. One-time prices range from $39 to $1,190 and monthly from $49 to $265. Activation fees and resets sit on top at some firms.

Is a monthly or one-time futures prop plan cheaper?

The medians in our data come from different plan sets, but even so the $165 one-time median already undercuts one month at the $179 monthly median. What a monthly plan buys is the option to stop after one month instead of committing a one-time fee.

What is an activation fee at a futures prop firm?

A one-time fee some firms charge when you pass, before the funded account opens. 14 of the 71 one-step $50K plans we track charge one, at a $125 median. Topstep's Standard 50K path charges $149 per funded account earned.

How much does a futures prop firm reset cost?

Published reset fees in our verified October 2026 examples: TradeDay charges $59 to $79 depending on the plan, FundedNext charges $82.99 on the Flex 50K, and Topstep charges $49 to $95 at the 50K size. How a reset compares with a fresh purchase varies by firm and promotion, so compare both at checkout.

Do you get the evaluation fee back if you fail?

On the plans we verified, the fee buys the attempt and failing means paying for a reset or a new plan to retry: TradeDay lists resets at $59 to $79, FundedNext at $82.99 and Topstep at $49 to $95. Refund terms vary by firm, so read the refund clause before paying.

Prop trading carries a real risk of losing every fee you pay. This article is general information, not financial advice. Always read the firm's own rules before you buy.

How we got these numbers

Computed from our futures challenges CSV dated 2026-10-25 (327 plan rows from 23 firms; row counts, so firms with more plans weigh more). $50K figures use the 71 one-step $50K rows. Scenario totals use list prices checked on official pages on 2026-10-25, no promo codes, and assume one reset where stated; firm promotions change frequently.
